You can never be too careful about what you put on your baby’s skin. I avoid commercial lotions full of chemicals and preservatives, and this simple homemade baby lotion has been my go-to solution.

Why You Should Make Your Own Baby Lotion at Home
Baby skin is especially absorbent, so ingredients you apply topically can enter the body. That’s why many parents prefer to avoid synthetic fragrances, preservatives, and other unnecessary additives by making their own lotion from simple, natural ingredients.
This homemade lotion is versatile and gentle enough for infants while also working well for adults. It’s lightweight, absorbs quickly, and can be adjusted for different skin needs: increase the aloe vera gel for oilier skin, add more coconut oil for extra moisture, or incorporate a few drops of a suitable essential oil for additional benefits such as calming or antibacterial effects.
Coconut oil absorbs readily and provides nourishing fatty acids, while aloe vera gel helps the mixture blend and reduces greasiness. Together they create a creamy lotion that feels pleasant on the skin. If you choose to add an essential oil, lavender is a popular option—calming for sleep and known for mild antibacterial properties—though any essential oil should be used sparingly and with care around infants.
There’s some debate about how long homemade lotions are safe at room temperature. In my experience, the mixture has kept well on the countertop for a couple of months, but many people prefer to add a few drops of an antibacterial essential oil or refrigerate the lotion for longer storage. When chilled, the lotion firms up and takes on a lotion-bar consistency rather than remaining creamy.
Homemade Baby Lotion Recipe
Ingredients:
- 1/2 cup coconut oil
- 1/2 cup aloe vera gel
- Essential oil – several drops (optional, and use with caution around babies)
Instructions:
- Gently warm the coconut oil just until it melts; do not overheat. Combine the melted coconut oil with cold aloe vera gel and, if desired, a few drops of essential oil.
- Blend the mixture in a blender, food processor, or with a stick blender until it becomes smooth and well emulsified.
- Transfer the lotion to a container with a tight-fitting lid. Store at room temperature if your home stays below about 75°F (24°C), or refrigerate if your home is warmer. Refrigeration will create a firmer texture.
Notes
Keep in mind that coconut oil liquefies above roughly 75°F (24°C). If your home is warmer, store the lotion in the refrigerator to maintain a stable texture. Always introduce any new product slowly and patch-test on a small area of skin before regular use, especially on babies.
