I always like to make playful treats for every holiday, even if I don’t always post them or write a tutorial. With Easter coming up and fun cookie ideas everywhere, I felt inspired to create some silly Easter cookies. I’ve also been enjoying a bit of anime lately, and the bunny design here was partly inspired by that style.
Killer Bunny Cookies
Supplies:
Cookies (baked and cooled)
Royal icing (piping and flood consistencies)
Food gel coloring: orange, green, pink, black
Piping bags and tips
A clean brush
Toothpicks or wooden skewers
Begin with baked and cooled sugar cookies. If you don’t have a cutter for these shapes, you can make simple custom cutters or cut the shapes with a knife. For my carrots I used a flower cutter for the tops and a rounded cutter for bite marks. There are two main designs here: the bunny and the carrot. We’ll start with the bunny.
Using a clean brush, paint a thick area of black royal icing where the mouth will be. It doesn’t need to be perfect—just make sure it’s large enough so the white icing you’ll add next won’t have gaps. Then outline the cookie, the inside of the ears, and the mouth area with white piping consistency icing. Flood the outlined areas with white flood icing.
Let the white icing set just a little before adding cheeks and arms. Now fill the ear centers with pink flood icing. After the ears, use white flood icing to add the arms, cheeks, and teeth. The timing should allow these details to settle into a smooth transition without completely sinking into the base layer.
While the bunny icing begins to set, move on to the carrots. Outline the carrot shape with orange piping icing and fill with orange flood icing. Use green icing with a slightly thicker (about 20-second) consistency to pipe stems from the top. Add zigzag strokes over those lines to create a fuller, leafy look.
When the carrot icing has started to crust, return to the bunnies to finish faces. Pipe eyes with black icing (20-second consistency) and, while still wet, add a small white dot for a catchlight to give the eyes dimension. Let the bunnies dry completely—plan for at least four hours so the icing hardens fully.
Once the carrot cookies are crusted, add large white dots for eyes using 20-second white icing. While the white is wet, add black pupils. Then create mouths, eyebrows, and other expressions to give each carrot personality. Finish by piping orange lines on the carrot bodies for texture.
After the bunnies are fully dry, add subtle shading around the arms and cheeks with a tiny amount of brown or black food coloring to enhance depth. Add small details like lines on the teeth, paw marks, and a touch of pink on the cheeks for extra character.
Allow all cookies to dry completely before packaging to ensure decorations remain intact.
Happy baking!
