Sherwin-Williams Repose Gray: My Go-To Gray Paint Color

We chose Sherwin‑Williams Repose Gray to paint our new house, and I absolutely love it — it’s the perfect neutral gray.

Thanks to Sherwin‑Williams for providing the paint for this project.

When we moved in the walls were a cream color. That shade isn’t terrible, but after living with cream walls for years I wanted something different. Choosing a paint color can be hard — at our last house I sampled half a dozen paints before deciding — so this time I focused on finding a calm, neutral gray that would work with multiple rooms and styles.

I visited model homes during the Parade of Homes and made note of colors I liked. Repose Gray kept coming up: several designers and builders told me it was Sherwin‑Williams Repose Gray. It looked consistently good in different homes and lighting, so I decided to go for it. Below is a photo I took in a model bedroom showing the color in a real space.

We painted the entry, kitchen, family room, hallway, and our daughter’s bedroom in Repose Gray. The bathrooms are next once I remove some wallpaper. Repose Gray performs beautifully in every room — it reads warm or cool depending on the light, and it pairs well with many decor styles.

The kitchen is a dramatic before-and-after. The previous cream color made the space feel OK, but switching to Repose Gray opened it up and made it feel fresher. Friends who knew the house commented that the rooms feel larger and more connected after the paint.

Visitors often ask what paint we used because it’s such a universally flattering gray. The great room and family room photos below show how versatile the color is: it looks great with natural light, artificial light, and layered textures.

We also updated the fireplace area and added simple decor; changing the wall color plus styling really transformed the focal point. The before-and-after images show how paint combined with accessories can make a big difference.

The entry is still awaiting decor, but painting it in Repose Gray gave the whole home a cohesive, welcoming feel and made decorating easier.

We plan to replace the countertops and paint the cabinets to better coordinate with the new color. I’m also looking forward to new sofas, a rug, and accent tables — all part of finishing the space once I’m recovered from surgery and ready to tackle more projects.

For this project we used Sherwin‑Williams Emerald Interior Acrylic Latex Paint in a satin finish. As a parent of five, I need a finish that cleans well, and Emerald has held up to fingerprints, markers, watercolors, and food splatters. It cleans up easily and resists scuffs.

I typically let paint cure for at least a week before letting things touch the walls. Two days after painting, my sons leaned a dozen picture frames against the wall in our daughter’s room. I worried the frames had left marks, but the paint had set up quickly and cleaned up without a trace — a relief.

If you’re searching for a durable, versatile gray, I recommend Sherwin‑Williams Repose Gray. It’s balanced, adaptable to different lighting conditions, and looks great across a range of rooms and styles.
