I love recycling and saving small items others throw away. Cereal boxes are ideal for quick projects like these DIY succulent planters. They’re inexpensive, easy to personalize, and perfect for faux succulents if you want a no-maintenance display.

These recycled planter holders are fast to make and require only a few common supplies you probably already have: a cereal box, paint, washi tape, floral foam, and a few craft tools. They’re great for adding color and texture to shelves, windowsills, or tabletops without spending much.

Materials:

  • Empty cereal box or any rectangular box to make a long, narrow planter
  • Scissors
  • White paint (base coat)
  • Craft paints in turquoise, orange, and lime green
  • Paint brushes
  • Grey washi tape
  • Floral foam
  • Three small artificial succulents

Directions:

  • Cut the cereal box so the sides are about 3 inches tall to create a low planter box.
  • Paint the entire exterior of the box white as a base coat. Allow to dry completely.
  • Lightly sketch an arrow-inspired design on the side of the box to guide your painting.
  • Use turquoise paint to create a center stripe roughly 5 inches long and 1/2 inch wide. Apply two coats if needed and let dry between coats.
  • Paint an orange arrowhead on one end of the turquoise stripe and a small orange triangle on the opposite end, keeping them the same width as the stripe.
  • Add three short orange lines on either side of the arrowhead to suggest feathers or detailing.
  • Trim the top edges of the box with grey washi tape for a finished look.
  • Cut a piece of floral foam to fit snugly inside the box.
  • Press the artificial succulents into the foam and arrange them until you’re happy with the composition.
