I’ll be honest: since moving to California, Cinco de Mayo sometimes slips by us. Growing up in Austin, where Mexican food is outstanding, I’ve found many restaurants here don’t always measure up. Still, this holiday is a wonderful celebration of Mexican and Mexican-American culture, and it’s a great excuse to cook and share special dishes.

I cook gluten-free Mexican meals for my family a few times a week — they feel like comfort food to us. Below you’ll find a variety of cocktails, appetizers, mains, and desserts you can prepare for your Cinco de Mayo gathering. Enjoy the holiday and the flavors!

Why Celebrate Cinco de Mayo?

Cinco de Mayo honors Mexico’s heritage and commemorates the Mexican army’s victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla in 1862. It is often mistaken for Mexican Independence Day, which is actually celebrated on September 16. Cinco de Mayo has evolved into a day to celebrate Mexican culture, food, music, and community.

To help you mark the day, here are some of my favorite gluten-free Mexican recipes. They cover cocktails, appetizers, hearty meals, and classic desserts — all perfect for a festive menu.
