A playful Vampire portrait on a wooden board, using mozzarella balls for hair, ham for the face, blanched almonds for the fangs, cucumber and mozzarella for the body, and cherry tomatoes for the jacket.

Serve the board with fresh basil tucked into the vampire’s shirt and a loaf of focaccia for a satisfying appetizer. Leave some empty space on the board so you can add extra tomatoes, mozzarella balls or crackers as needed.

A Vampire face made from ham, mozzarella balls, cucumber, cherry tomatoes, and cheese is arranged on a wooden board. Surrounding it is small plastic spiders and string lights.

Place a bowl of cocktail sticks nearby and let guests build their own skewers. Offer extra-virgin olive oil, balsamic glaze and flaky sea salt for finishing touches.

Recipe Tip

If you prefer a scarier look, invert the mouth into a frown and angle the cucumber peel eyebrows upward to give the vampire a menacing expression.

Assemble the board a few hours before your event and store it covered in the refrigerator until you’re ready to serve.

Equipment

  • metal straw
  • small round cookie cutter
  • medium round cookie cutter

Ingredients

  • 2 slices ham
  • 200 grams bocconcini, mozzarella balls
  • 200 grams cherry tomatoes, or grape tomatoes
  • 1 cucumber
  • 1 fresh mozzarella
  • 2 almonds

Instructions

  • Arrange the two ham slices overlapping in the center of a serving board to form the vampire’s face.
  • Place bocconcini above the ham to create the vampire’s hair.
  • To blanch the almonds for fangs, pour boiling water over them in a heatproof bowl for 3–4 minutes until the skins loosen. Drain and slip off the peels—take care to avoid burns.
  • Slice thin strips of cucumber peel to form the trim of the jacket and any eyebrow details.
  • Use the small round cutter to make tiny cucumber peel pupils and a metal straw to punch out three button shapes from cucumber peel for the jacket.
  • Cut a long, thin piece of cucumber peel into a simple nose and mouth shape.
  • Slice the fresh mozzarella and trim two small rectangles to act as the collar pieces.
  • Use the medium cookie cutter to cut round shirt details and the eyes from mozzarella or cucumber as desired.
  • Assemble the vampire on the board, using halved cherry tomatoes for the jacket so they sit securely without rolling.
  • Add finishing touches, garnish with basil leaves, and serve immediately.
