I’ve made these charming snowmen Oreo cookies for years. They’re quick to assemble, require only a few basic supplies, and always look adorable on a holiday cookie plate or wrapped up as a small gift. These cookies are especially fun to make with kids — the decorating is simple and forgiving, and the finished treats are festive and irresistible.
These snowmen pair nicely with other holiday-themed Oreos and simple seasonal cookies. If you enjoy themed cookie projects, try coordinating colors and textures to make a matching platter.
What you’ll need to make Snowmen Oreos
- Oreos (regular or Golden Oreos work well)
- White candy melts or white coating chocolate
- Red candy melts (for hats)
- Black candy melts or black decorating gel (for eyes and mouth)
- Orange jimmie sprinkles or small orange candies (for the carrot nose)
- Sanding sugar or coarse decorating sugar (for hat sparkle)
- Parchment paper, a baking sheet, and a piping bag or small sandwich bag
How to make Snowmen Oreos
These instructions are straightforward. Read through the steps before you start so the process flows smoothly and each element has time to set.
1. Prepare work surface: Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone mat. Have your candy melts, piping bags, and decorations ready.
2. Make the snowballs for hats: Melt a portion of the white candy melts in a microwave-safe bowl according to package directions, stirring frequently until smooth. Spoon a little of the melted white coating into a piping bag or small plastic sandwich bag and snip a tiny corner.
Pipe small white rounds on the parchment paper, each a little smaller than a dime. While the white drops are still wet, sprinkle them lightly with sanding sugar so they sparkle. Allow these to cool and harden completely; these become the pom-poms for the snowmen’s hats.
3. Coat the Oreos: Melt the remaining white candy melts in a clean bowl. Holding an Oreo by the edge, dip it into the white coating to cover the cookie completely. Lift and gently tap the edge of the bowl to remove excess coating. Place the coated Oreo on the prepared parchment paper. Repeat until all Oreos are coated. Let them set until the white coating is firm.
4. Create the hats: Melt the red candy melts in a microwave-safe bowl following the package instructions. Dip the top portion of each coated Oreo into the red coating to form a hat. Immediately sprinkle the still-wet red coating with sanding sugar for a festive shimmer, then attach one of the prepared white snowballs at the corner of the hat to resemble a pom-pom. Set aside to harden.
5. Add faces and noses: Melt the black candy melts. Transfer the black melt to a piping bag or small sandwich bag with the tip snipped off. Pipe two small dots for eyes and a series of tiny dots for the mouth on each snowman. For the carrot nose, use a small dab of white candy melt as glue and press an orange jimmie sprinkle or a small orange candy into it. Let everything set until fully firm, about 20–30 minutes.
6. Final tips: Work in small batches if your kitchen is warm so the coatings set faster. If the candy melts thicken while you work, reheat briefly and stir until smooth. If you prefer, you can use edible markers for facial details instead of piping with melted chocolate.
Note: Holiday-flavored Oreos or Golden Oreos are both excellent alternatives and can change the look of the finished cookies while keeping the same easy technique.
